Pictured is Lucy, our black and white Lhasa, born 14 years ago and the namesake for Lucy's Cozy Cottage, birthed just 2 1/2 years ago, located in Lone Star Antique Mall in Fort Worth.
The allure of old black and white photos and their various shades of aging, along with ecru book pages and tea-stained sheet music serve as a backdrop for a time that was. A time before "the information age/MTV, 20 seconds of your attention" age. A time when the written word, often in long hand, and a favorite "vinyl record" could provide a feast for the senses and an evening of relaxing entertainment.
My parents were in their twenties during the end of World War II. Their youth included women earning the "right to vote" (something my dad always thought a bad idea), prohibition,(ditto that) the "great Depression", outdoor plumbing, ice boxes, telephone operator assisted call placement, and on and on. Rich experiences, the past.
My husband's parents were born just after the beginning of the 20th century. They were entertainers, theater folks. His mother and her sister were traveling Vaudeville dancers, (along with an appointed chaperone) from young girls 'till they married. His father was a theatre manager when theaters were clad in velvet and gilded flourishings and elaborate pipe organs where patrons went to be entertained and be seen. Newspaper clippings and 8 x 10 photos of "the girls" in their twenties clothing and costumes and his father sporting a straw bowler and spats make us wish for a few minutes back in time to eyewitness this iconic part of our history and culture.
These wonderful old pieces of nostalgia along with an interest in the unique and unusual prompted us to step into the world of junking. Once we got our toes wet, we were hooked. What a wonderfully interesting and diverse group of people, our fellow junkateurs...we have much to explore.
